Seven years ago today, Rapha Farms began with a purple goat on a sign and a whole lot of hope. Back then, our name was Oasis Creations, and I was at one of the lowest points of my life. I had just started the long road of divorce, and I was broke — so broke that I was on food stamps and cash assistance. I couldn’t even afford to buy anything from the other vendors at my first markets. I sold plasma to make ends meet.
But I had a dream, and I had goats.
It didn’t take long before I realized I didn’t love that purple goat or the name Oasis Creations. I wanted something that truly reflected what my soaps did — they healed people’s skin. My dear friend Diana suggested adding the word Rapha, which means “healer.” In Scripture, God is called Jehovah Rapha — our healing Father. That name stuck, and Rapha Farms was born.
Our first sale was actually at the Delano Gun Club, if you can believe that! I don’t even remember how much I made — probably not much — but it sure wasn’t impressive. Still, I didn’t give up. (Guess that’s one of my better qualities!)
As the business grew, so did my daughter Sarah. She grew up selling soap, and she was amazing. She was fearless — the kind of kid who could charm anyone. I’ll never forget her yelling across the aisle at some young guys, “We’ve got hot man-smelling soaps here!” — and sure enough, she sold them some.
We slowly began to thrive. No more relying on food shelves — in fact, we started buying a table at the Rockford Food Shelf’s annual fundraiser. That moment still feels surreal… going from needing help to being able to give back.
This is our first anniversary since Sarah’s passing, and it’s been hard. I’ve lost some of my drive without her by my side. But I know she’d be proud of what this little farm and business have become. Someday, I hope to find someone who can partner with me — someone who will continue what we built as I begin to slow down a bit.
Until then, I’ll keep showing up — for Sarah, for the customers who believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself, and for all of you who’ve made Rapha Farms what it is today.
From the bottom of my heart — thank you. 💜
Here’s to healing, hope, and handmade goat milk soap.
With gratitude,
Karen
